Nine13sports has received an expansion grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to support additional growth of Nine13sports Kids Riding Bikes and Kids Building Bikes programs throughout Marion County.
Nine13sports will be using this matching fund grant to deliver Kids Riding Bikes programming into more schools and also invest in equipment necessary to deliver their newest program – Kids Building Bikes. Lilly Endowment will award a portion of this grant after Nine13sports raises $50,000 from other sources during a 2019 matching period to be announced in the coming weeks.
“Lilly Endowment has generously challenged us to expand our corporate and individual donor partners and we are thankful for this opportunity to leverage their support. The Endowment sees the unique value our programming provides as we work alongside the educators in schools and staff at community centers who improve the education of youth throughout the city. We are so grateful to Lilly Endowment for its approach to ensuring that our growth will be sustainable for years to come” said Nine13sports CEO, Tom Hanley.
Kids Riding Bikes utilizes an interactive & engaging indoor bicycle simulator that gets students in grades K-8 riding and allows them to achieve personal goals while also practicing teamwork and mutual respect for their peers. The program is delivered to students during the school day as part of physical education classes. Nearly 50,000 students in more than 100 schools participated in the program during 2018. However the wait list of schools for the program is immense. Funding from this grant will help Nine13sports to reach an additional 60 schools a year.
Kids Building Bikes provides youth in underserved communities with a hands-on opportunity to learn the fundamentals of bicycle maintenance and repair and results in graduates earning a brand-new bicycle, helmet & lock. Throughout the 8 class sessions conducted as an afterschool program in a custom built 48’ mobile bike shop trailer, students will gain confidence and a foundation for independence while learning project management and critical thinking skills as Nine13sports staff introduce a variety of STEM based principles that can be learned from working with the bicycle. A portion of this grant will help fund equipment needed to deliver this program in a mobile format in areas of the city where it is most needed.
