During this past weekend, Nine13sports faced a situation that we’ve never ventured before – being at two locations at the same time. On Saturday, July 11th, half of the Nine13sports crew was down in Shelbyville in the morning running programming at the Get Healthy Here Farmers Market. This event was held to increase awareness about health and wellness and for that reason, Shelbyville and Shelby County Farmers partnered to highlight healthy eating and physical activity. While this was going on, the other half of the Nine13sports team was positioned at Monument’s Circle for the annual Indy Criterium bike race. For those unfamiliar with the Indy Criterium, it’s more than just a bike rice; it’s a celebration of “all things biking” in our community. Furthermore, 100% of the proceeds from the event goes to Freewheelin’ Community Bikes. Freewheelin’ Community Bikes is a local community bike shop and youth organization that serves kids in the Indianapolis community and is a proud partners of ours. What’s more, the race has grown in both size and and popularity among racers across the Midwest over the past few years. Since 2013, the event has attracted 500+ racers and thousands of spectators, volunteers, and fans. Half of the Nine13 crew rocked the Indy Crit until around 1:00 o’clock and then were joined by the rest of the staff upon their return from Shelbyville. The Indy Crit wrapped up around 6:45 p.m.
When you face the challenge of embarking on something new, especially with all of the logistics that were involved in having two teams set up during the same time, it’s reassuring to have the staff and interns that we do to be able to make it happen. All three of our interns were able to get a great deal of practical experience on Saturday, namely giving riders and other individuals information about Nine13sports and what we do, encouraging and motivating the riders while they rode our bikes, and
even rocking interviews. Yes, two of our interns had the thrill of being interviewed this past Saturday. Myles Chandler, a graduate student from Purdue University, was interviewed by Fox 59 reporter Jillian Deam. During the interview, Myles gave a brief description of Nine13sports and then rode away in his super cool unicycle. The other interview was Ashley Nolley, a senior-to-be at Indiana University, who was interviewed by Gabrielle Reed of the Saturday Shelby. The interview with Ashley will be available by print edition of the Saturday Shelby this Saturday, therefore, stay tuned to all of our social media and traditional channels to be able to view this. Lastly, we want to give a BIG thank you to everyone who was involved in making this day successful – from our amazing partners, to all of the Indy Criterium volunteers, and, of course, our awesome staff and interns!
